Property Tax and Utility Rate

Property Tax and Utility Rate

In 2023, the City proposed a mill rate increase of 4.67% and 4.66% increase in 2024. This year, Regina residents will face at least a 2.20% increase in property taxes and a 4% hike in utility rates. Understandably, this has led to widespread dissatisfaction among the community. Many feel that the services they receive are not commensurate with the higher taxes and utility costs. As your candidate for Ward 2, I am committed to addressing these concerns head-on and advocating for a fairer, more transparent approach to taxation and service delivery.

Key Concerns

  • Disproportionate Tax Increases: The steady rise in property taxes and utility rates is putting a strain on household budgets, especially for families and seniors on fixed incomes.
  • Service Quality: Despite the tax hikes, which the City blames on increased inflation on basic building materials like concrete, gravel, sand and fuel, the quality and reliability of City services, including road maintenance, waste management, and public safety, have not improved to match the increased financial burden on residents. For example, our brown garbage is taken out only once every two weeks. Outside of bus routes, the snow on a lot of our streets is taken out only once a year.
  • Transparency and Accountability: There is a lack of clarity on how the additional revenue from tax and rate increases is being utilized, leading to mistrust and frustration among residents.

My Commitment

As your councillor, I will:

  • Advocate for Fair Taxation: I will push for a comprehensive review of the citys tax policies to ensure they are fair and equitable. We need a system that does not disproportionately impact low and middle-income families.
  • Enhance Service Delivery: I will work tirelessly to ensure that the services provided by the city meet the expectations and needs of our community. This includes improving infrastructure, enhancing public safety, and ensuring efficient waste management.
  • Increase Transparency: I will demand greater transparency in the citys budget and expenditure processes. Residents deserve to know how their money is being spent and what tangible benefits they are receiving in return.
  • Promote Community Engagement: I will foster a culture of open dialogue between the city council and residents. By regularly engaging with the community, I will ensure that your voices are heard and that your concerns are addressed.
