Regina's Construction Season Updates

Regina's Construction Season Updates

As Regina's construction season moves past the halfway mark, the City continues to lay the groundwork for future growth and enhance the vibrancy of our community. Here's a look at some of the key construction projects and updates from the first half of the season:

Dewdney Avenue Corridor Revitalization Project

The Dewdney Avenue Corridor Revitalization Project is set to enter its next phase on September 3, with construction expected to last approximately one month. This phase will focus on extensive water and sewer work at the intersection of Albert Street and Dewdney Avenue, requiring excavation up to 28 feet underground—the length of a Regina Transit bus.

To facilitate this crucial work, several temporary traffic changes will take effect starting September 3:

  • Albert Street will be closed between 8th and 9th Avenues, including Dewdney Avenue, with limited traffic allowed on one southbound lane.
  • Dewdney Avenue will be closed from Angus Street to McIntyre Street.
  • The Warehouse District will remain open for business and accessible via the Broad Street side of Dewdney, with parking available at Dewdney Avenue and Scarth Street in The Yards.

Advance signage will guide drivers to alternate routes and ensure the safety of construction workers. For more details and the latest wayfinding map for Phase 1C, residents can visit Regina.ca/dewdney.

Water Network Expansion Project

Progress continues on the Water Network Expansion Project, with crews installing a new water main along Ring Road between Winnipeg Street and McDonald Street, and between Albert and Broad Streets. The eastbound on-ramp to Albert Street North has now been reopened to traffic.

Southwest Sewer Upgrade Project

Work on the Southwest Sewer Upgrade Project is ongoing, with McCarthy Boulevard currently reduced to one lane in both directions due to the closure of southbound lanes between Dewdney Avenue and Brunskill Place. Construction in A.E. Wilson Park is advancing, with plans to reopen McCarthy Boulevard early in September.

11th Avenue Revitalization Project

The 11th Avenue Revitalization Project has entered a new phase, shifting the construction zone further west. As a result, 11th Avenue remains closed between Scarth Street and Cornwall Street to accommodate ongoing work by SaskPower and SaskTel.

Mid-Season Infrastructure Highlights

Investing in infrastructure is vital to creating a thriving community where residents can live, work, and play. Here are some key achievements from the mid-season construction efforts:

  • 2.3 km of water mains and 17.8 km of sewer mains have been replaced, with an additional 2.5 km of water mains relined.
  • 125 lead connections have been replaced across the city this year.
  • Nearly 5,000 tons of asphalt have been used for road repairs and pothole patching.
  • 3.5 km of road and 6.5 km of sidewalks have been repaired, along with the installation of 45 new pedestrian ramps.
  • Several safety improvements have been implemented under the Vision Zero framework, including the installation of five new school zone flashing LED signs, two traffic-calming curb locations, and the creation of Regina’s first Community Safety Zone in the Cathedral neighborhood.

The City is committed to minimizing disruptions for residents through careful planning and coordination. With the new school year approaching, residents are encouraged to stay informed about road closures and traffic updates by visiting the Road Report and allowing extra travel time. Traffic updates are also integrated into Waze, which syncs with Google Maps for real-time navigation.
